Peanut

audiences engaging installation | 2014
Medium: Multi media installation
Strolling along Kowloon Walled City Park - An Exhibition on Kowloon City and Extend exhibition

In the old days in China, people gather around to chit chat with shelling peanuts. Nowadays, Mr. Peanuts is a popular term in Hong Kong to describe people who like to speak without further action. I try to revert such negative impression back to a more constructive approach. The exhibition is about Kowloon City, therefore, I create a corner for listening Kowloon City's residents chatting, while audiences can shell peanuts in the exhibition. The sound of eating peanuts, stepping on the shells create a playful yet unavoidable sonic experience to the audiences. Wandering in the exhibition with peanuts could be a vintage way to witness the transformation of our city.

Such way of audiences' engagement is also a test of limitation of different parties. Since the peanut shells were left in the exhibition area throughout the period, consensus of other artists, audiences and person in charge of the venue are involved.

3 hours sound walk | 2014

As part of the Kowloon City Urban Renewal Learning Network activity, artist Lo Chi Kit and Sin Yu Tsang led a sound walk in Kowloon City. The sound walk lasted for three hours. Participants had to keep a distance from each other,  and to remain silence during the walk, including lunch time in restaurants. Besides, they had to eat slowly during lunch time. The whole process was about learning to be slow in such a 'noisy', fast paced city, take the initiative of their own lifestyle, appreciate and enjoy those they disliked formerly. What we claimed to be noisy could be transformed to life symphony.

Sonic Anchor #16
Fieldwork vs Housework

31'35" performance | 2014

In this performance, I try to bring intimate domestic activities on stage. Borrowed to the specific acoustic design of the McAulay Studio, where housework is not a chore, but a sonic-theatrical event that warrants our attention.

This is my Sonic Anchor debut solo performance in Hong Kong Art Centre. Special thanks to Samson Young for the invitation, and Alex Yiu for his collaboration in the dark.

Thanks to Matt's suggestion, this special staircase allowed us to make some noise and listen the sound in the architecture. I like very much that audiences were spread around the place during the performance.

It demonstrate how to enjoy the sonic environment engaged in doing performance actions. I am going to explore some funny way to listen the sound by some simple practices. If we can exaggerate the environment to listen specific sound sources, we can notice the different hidden sound and spatial qualities in our living place. It is also a way to discover our own city.

performance and recording | 5 tracks album | 2011
Exhibition: Around sound art festival 2013, soundpocket, HK

Documentary Video

I did a project by using H4N recorder to record things that sound artists do not want to hear in their recordings normally, such as the wind crashing or shaking sound. I believe that audio recorder has its own characteristics when it “listens” the world and they can be explored to open our sonic experience. I try to alter the position of technological means and artist and to get inspiration from it. I take the zoom recorder H4N without its wind-shield or any external microphone to record tracks. These tracks demonstrate the zoom recorder is not under a normal recording condition. The position is not stable, microphones are in touch with materials, wind is hitting on the microphones, etc. I made the tracks into an album and documented the process of how I did it by video. No processing or mixing for all soundtracks and the microphone level during the whole recording process is the same.

Current Kwun Tong

27'59" sound composition | 2011

Hong Kong Government has planned to redevelop the central of Kwun Tong, where it was claimed to be too old and cause serious traffic jams. The Yue Man Sqaure will be removed and the new town will be more high-rises and a ‘modern’ Civic Square. This will cause all the originated small business will disappear in several years.

Therefore, I do a project with field recordings in the redevelopment area in order to preserve the present life in Kwun Tong. I make a sound collage which can represent my impression towards this moment’s Kwun Tong.

Home Symphony

2'03" sound composition | 2010

Mixing the sound elements that I record in my home from daily life, it focuses on the recurring rhythm.

718 World Listening Day
Sounds we might have missed

4 hours sound walk | 2011

Besides listening to your favourite music tracks, friends’ voices, television or radio, what else? On July 17th, soundpocket organizes a trip with a series of exercises that discern different ways of listening. The itinerary covers several districts, including a picnic at HSBC Headquarters and a ferry trip from Central to Tsim Sha Tsui. Join us and find out how your ears would react to the sound of fountains, jars, parks, market, tunnel, wave, wind…etc. Exercises led by active listeners Tsang Sin Yu and Susie Law.

WAYS TO GET INVOLVED:
- join us in Sounds we might have missed
- put our earphones aside for one minute, one hour, one day
- listen again to what we habitually do; notice the texture of the sound
- stop making sound for a while and eavesdrop on those made by others
- treat our ears as if they are our greatest treasure
- listen to stories from the others: everyone has a right to be listened to
- make a list of favorite sounds (or least favorite ones)
- allow ourselves 5 minutes to do nothing but listening

When Hong Kong meets Madrid

4'41" sound composition | 2011

This is part of a project called Sound Localities by
LOUDSPKR. Every participants upload field recordings in their own city, and are allowed to mix freely. Since I think there is similarity in rhythm of Hong Kong and Madrid, so I make this compilation.

Untitled #008

sound composition | 2010

Sound matter which are out of our recognition but actually from the field recordings, some really mild sound. Better listen with headphone.

Untitled #007

Sound composition / 7'49" / 2010

This work is to emulate the style and approach of the Spanish sound artist Francisco Lopez. He focuses on the hidden sonic matter which are apart from our visual perception. He tries to arrange them incidentally in order to make listeners have a “natural” experience on the environment as a whole.

I also believe that our world is covered by layers of sound, however, we always neglect those noise and ambience. It’s almost impossible to hear or record a pure sound object. What we hear is the sound reflected by different materials and in different environment. Therefore, I want to show the sound matter which are out of our recognition but actually from the field recordings to enrich our profound listening. Before I did the arrangement of the found samples, I closed my eyes and listen to the midnight. My sonic experience at that particular moment inspired the work.

The Rhythm of Glasses

10' 00" performance | 2010

This project is done with Michelle Cheng. It is an installation signifying the nature of glass bottles which acts as a physical musical instrument. Meanwhile, being also a performance, glass bottles are being moved randomly to create different rhythms during the collisions of individual bottles with the motor generated light bulb. The motor is tied with a string and a light bulb, it is suspended from the ceiling. When the motor is on, it hits the surrounding glass bottles constantly.
